Teaching Archive and student presentations

On this page you will find links to teaching material which will be used during the medical students' teaching sessions. All the files are in HTML and consist of Text based or Powerpoint presentations. Some of the smaller Powerpoint presentations are downloadable. The text content is copyable onto a local disc or printable through your browser. Please fell free to use the material as you wish. Some of the material has been modified from that which appeared in an Anaesthetic Textbook written with my colleague Jose Ponte from GKT (nla).

Some of the documents (in blue) have associated Powerpoint presentations (in red). It is best to read the documents first and then look at the slide show.

Acute respiratory failure

This document provides an introduction to the causes and management of acute respiratory filure which are commonly seen in A and E and on the wards. It should be read in conjunction with the documents on arterial blood gases and oxygen therapy.

The latest version is Password protected and can be found by following this link.

Airway, drips and ECG

This document, now complete with lots of illustrations, covers the topics raised in the Skills Teaching Session i.e. airway control and drips. It also includes a section on ECG monitoring during anaesthesia.

Anaesthesia for laparoscopy

This Powerpoint presentation is based on a lecture given to the Basic Laparoscopy in Urology Course held at King's in April/May 2001. The reference list can be found following this link.

Antibiotics

This document contains information about common antibiotic questions in MCQs as well as a brief description of how the common antibiotics work.

Anti-emetics and nausea and vomiting

This Powerpoint presentation takes you through some basic ideas about nausea and vomiting and the use of anti-emetics. It is a based on a frim student presentation in Feb 2005.

Arterial blood gases and acid base balance

This document is intended for medical students getting to grips with arterial blood gases and acid base balance. It should act as a springboard to allow interpretation of blood gases seen in the operating theatre and intensive care unit.

Clinical trials

This document enumerates 6 principles which should be adhered to in the construction of a clinical trial

Clinical trials and statistics

This Powerpoint presentation introduces some of the problems of setting up clinical trials and also some simple statistical concepts.

Diabetes: perioperative management

This is based on a student presentation in May 2005 by Anna Freeman

Digoxin

This Powerpoint presentation was written by one of my Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics students and is very good! It is animated, so please left click on the mouse to advance the presentation.

Heart failure (1)

This document which was written by myself and Dr. John Sedgewick covers the pathophysiology and rationale of drug treatment of heart (cardiovascular) failure. The material is supplemented by the following Powerpoint presentatiom.

Heart failure (2)

This Powerpoint presentation supplements the above material.

History of Hypotensive Anaesthesia

This Powerpoint presentation is based on a lecture given to SpRs in the South East School of Anaesthesia on why History is important. The story behind the introduction of Hypotensive Anaesthesia and the drug management of hypertension is used to illustrate the points made. PLEASE NOTE This is a large file and make take a few minutes to download, even on a broadband connection.

Oxygen therapy and toxicity

This document covers the problems of oxygen delivery faced by patients in the perioperative period.

Pain and its management: General Principles (1)

This document contains information about pain mechanisms and pathways as well as some guidance on postoperative pain management

Pain and its management: Analgesics and the management of acute pain (2)

This Powerpoint preparation is designed to supplement the material in the Pain and its management document. There are a few multiple choice questions at the end. Give it a go!

Pain and its management: Techniques of Regional Analgesia and Anaesthesia (3)

This document is complimentary to the above two documents and contains information about the commoner regional local anaesthetic techniques.

Perioperative fluid therapy (1)

This document contains information about the principles behind rational perioperative fluid management. See also the interesting article on Ringer and Hartmann reprinted from Anaesthesia.

The latest version is can be found by following this link.

Perioperative Fluid Therapy (2)

This small Powerpoint presentation covers the basic principles behind fluid therapy and points out the differences between osmotic and oncotic pressure. It supplements the material in the Perioperative fluid therapy document.

Preoperative assessment and premedication

This document contains information about doing a preoperative assessment and what to look for.

Principles of Pharmacology and autonomic physiology relevant to anaesthesia and intensive care (1)

This document contains information about the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics as well as a section on cardiovascular autonomic physiology. The latest version is password protected and can be found here.

Principles of Pharmacology: Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics: An introduction (2)

This Powerpoint presentation is based on a lecture given at King's to the Final year students and supplements the Principles of pharmacology elements of the previous document. The last few slides contain a few questions (and answers) to test your knowledge of the material.

Perioperative management of sickle cell disease and trait

This is based on a student presentation by Yen-Phan Ta and Ruma Anand (May 2005)

Surgical Infections and their treatment

This document contains information about the causes and prevention of surgical infections and their treatment, including a short section on antibiotics.

How to approach answering the CPT essay question

This short Powerpoint presentation was designed for final year students about to take CPT finals. It gives some tips about deciphering exam questions and planning your answer.

Student presentations

In this section you will find links to some Powerpoint presentations which students on the firm have done either for the tutorial sessions (TS) or for end of firm assessments (EFP). The latter give you an idea of the sort of standard needed. I take no responsibility for the veracity of the information presented!

Primary Biliary cirrhosis (EFP)

Grave's disease (EFP)

Cirrhosis and hepatic failure (EFP)

Budd Chiari syndrome (EFP)
