Biography
The Early Years
1950 to 1968
- Born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Moved to the UK in same year
- School in Woodford Green, Essex: Penarth, Glamorgan and Fakenham,
Norfolk
- For those who like to follow family trees the following genealogy
will be of interest. The first family tree is based on the High family.
High was the maiden name of my great, great grandmother. She married
a Gibson and their son William married Mabel Bartaby (my great grandfather
and grandmother). Mabel Gibson was known to me as 'Granny Gibson' and
I can just remember her when I was an infant (early 50s). My grandmother
was also Mabel (Gibson) and she married a Powell, Jack Powell, my grandfather
who died in 1961. Mabel died in 1982. Both are buried in Fakenham cemetery
on Queen's road. My great grandmother Mabel's family (the Bartabys)
are mainly buried in Colkirk church graveyard. Mabel's father, Edmund
(my great, great grandfather) married a Nelson which is the link with
the famous Nelson family of Norfolk! The following link
shows the family tree of the Highs and the Bartabys.
The next link
shows the family tree of the Gibson, Powell and Cushing family. As you
can see, the Cushing family were a religious family and there were two
reverends in my great grandmother Eliza's family. J.W. Powell was my
great grandfather and at one time had two or three sadler's shops in
the Fakenham area of North Norfolk. My grandfather John (Jack) also
owned two grocery shops in Fakenham, Powell and Butler (see James Butler
on the family tree, he was a sleeping partner) and R.G. Pooley. I have
included an image of the Powell
Family (circa 1914). If you move the mouse pointer over the faces,
the names are indicated (see the genealogy link above).
The final link is a
small one showing more detail of my great grandfather William Gibson's
brothers and sisters. These family trees were drawn up in the mid 70s
with the help of my grandmother, Mabel. More work needs to be done to
fill in the gaps!
